A Better Way to Educate: Inside Greenbriar Community School (Interview)

A couple of weeks ago, I had the opportunity to sit down for a podcast interview with Connect Elgin to talk about Greenbriar Community School, including, what it is, how it works, and why it matters.

A major topic of discussion was about how Greenbriar isn’t just a school, it’s a community-centered model of education that blends homeschooling, real-world learning, and intentional living.

Greenbriar is a place where education isn’t confined to a classroom, but woven into daily life.

One of the things I shared is how different the learning environment is from traditional systems. Instead of a rigid, standardized curriculum, Greenbriar is flexible and responsive. It allows students to follow their interests, develop critical thinking skills, and take ownership of their education.Learning

Learning happens through experiences -building, creating, gardening, collaborating, or engaging in meaningful discussions.

We also talked about the role of community. Parents, teachers, and students are all part of the ecosystem. It’s not drop-off-and-disconnect from your kids type school (although drop off is an option!) – it’s participation, contribution, and shared responsibility. That dynamic creates a deeper level of connection and accountability, and it gives kids the opportunity to develop real social and life skills.

Another big theme in our conversation was sustainability and practical living. At Greenbriar, students aren’t just learning abstract concepts—they’re engaging with the land, understanding systems, and developing skills they can actually use in the real world.

For me personally, this model represents something much bigger than education. It’s about raising capable, self-directed humans who know how to think, not just what to think.

If you’re curious about alternative education, community-based learning, or what it looks like to step outside the conventional system, this conversation is a great place to start.
